Species Spotlight 〰️

Species Name

Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus)

Habitat & Range

Maned wolves are native to South America and are most commonly found in grasslands, savannas, and open forests across Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Their long legs help them move easily through tall grass and spot prey from a distance.

Physical Characteristics

The maned wolf is easily recognizable by its long legs, reddish-orange fur, black legs, and large upright ears. Despite its name, it is not closely related to true wolves and is the only species in its genus. Its unique body shape is perfectly adapted to open landscapes.

Diet & Role in the Ecosystem

Maned wolves are omnivores. Along with small mammals, birds, and insects, they eat a large amount of fruit—especially the wolf apple. By spreading seeds through their droppings, maned wolves play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Behavior & Lifestyle

Maned wolves are solitary and mostly nocturnal. They communicate through scent marking and deep, bark-like calls that can travel long distances. Rather than forming packs, they maintain large territories and avoid direct contact with others.

Threats

The greatest threats to maned wolves include habitat loss due to agriculture, road collisions, and conflict with humans. As grasslands continue to shrink, these animals are forced into smaller and more fragmented areas.

Conservation Status

The maned wolf is currently classified as Near Threatened. Conservation efforts focus on protecting habitats, reducing vehicle collisions, and educating local communities about the importance of this species.

Why This Species Matters

Maned wolves help balance ecosystems by controlling small animal populations and dispersing seeds. Protecting them also helps preserve South America’s grassland habitats, which are home to many other species.

Fun Fact 🐾
Maned wolves raise the fur along their shoulders (their “mane”) to look bigger and more intimidating when they feel threatened—kind of like a built-in scare tactic!

How You Can Help

You can help protect maned wolves by supporting organizations that work to conserve South American grasslands and wildlife habitats. Learning about and sharing information on lesser-known species like the maned wolf helps raise awareness and reduce fear or misinformation. Choosing sustainable products, reducing your environmental footprint, and advocating for habitat protection all contribute to the long-term survival of this species. Even small actions—like spreading awareness or supporting conservation efforts—can make a real difference.
